A lifelong reader, Lucas fell in love with writing and reporting as an undergraduate at Yale, where he earned his B.A. in Humanities. After college, he lived in São Paulo, Lima, New York, and Rio de Janeiro, until moving to Philadelphia for an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Temple University. His essays and reporting have taken him to gold mines in southern Peru, Samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, tribal lands in northern New Mexico, and the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. His work has recently appeared in The Nation, Vanity Fair, Words Without Borders, and Popula, where he was an Associate Editor.
Born in North Carolina to Peruvian immigrants, Lucas has been awarded fellowships by Yale, Temple, and the Millay Colony for the Arts. He teaches creative writing and composition at Temple and the University of the Arts, and is at work on a novel.
