Has Standardized Testing Made an Official Comeback?

With admission decisions for the future Class of 2029 nearly final, the admission cycle now resets for the next group of applicants - and one thing is clear: standardized testing is back in the spotlight. Since 2020, Spring brings an influx of colleges updating their standardized test policies. This Spring is no different.

Why Are Colleges Updating Their Testing Policies Now?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, universities paused their SAT and ACT requirements and launched two-three year test-optional pilot programs. Some extended these test-optional programs even longer. But now, as these programs expire, schools are reassessing their policies and most are implementing testing requirements.

Which Schools Have Recently Reinstated Testing Requirements?

The Ohio State University

The Ohio State University

Recently, the University of Pennsylvania and The Ohio State University both announced they will once again require test scores. These schools join a growing list that have already reinstated their testing requirements, ranging from highly selective private institutions like Brown, MIT, and Harvard, to large public institutions like University of Georgia and the University of Florida.

Are Test-Optional Schools Now in the Minority?

Not at all! While many schools are requiring test scores again, there are still many colleges that have taken test-optional “permanent” policies. Bowdoin has been test-optional for 50+ yearsBrandeis since 2013, and Colorado College since 2019! Despite being optional, we advise students to embrace the possibility of testing being additive to their application, and to view test scores as one more potentially impactful data point.

Further, all California State Universities and University of California campuses are test-blind, meaning they will not use SAT or ACT scores in any of their admission decisions, even if you send your scores.

Are Any Schools Still Undecided On Their Testing Policy?

The University of South Carolina

Yes. We expect to see some updated policies within the next month, such as from University of South Carolina that has only announced that they are test-optional through fall, spring, and summer 2025.

Further, some schools have not taken a firm stance on testing yet and have extended their deadlines, including Boston University (test optional through Fall 2028 and Spring 2029) and Syracuse (through Fall 2026 and Spring 2027).

What Does This Mean for Students?

LogicPrep encourages students to prepare for the SAT and/or ACT. We have long advocated that strong scores can be additive to a student’s application. Plus, scores open doors to more college options. Once a student takes a standardized test, a LogicPrep College Advisor will provide personalized guidance on the best strategy to implement regarding the submission of scores.
